The island that fires when the trades stop

A left-hand reef break on Ndao Island, west of Rote. The same trade winds that make T-Land perfect blow directly onshore here, which means Ndao's best days happen when the wind drops -- early mornings and off-season calms.

Ndao Island sits west of Rote, isolated and exposed. Its left-hand reef break catches the same south-southwest groundswells as the Nemberala breaks, but the orientation means the standard trade winds blow directly onshore and destroy the wave quality. That makes Ndao an off-season and early-morning spot. When the trades drop (shoulder seasons) or before they start (dawn), the wave transforms: long lefts that alternate between fast, powerful barrel sections and wide, open walls for carving. On the right day with 4--12 feet of swell and east-to-northeast wind, it's among the best lefts in the archipelago. The reef is shallow, with a particularly low and nasty coral plateau. High tide is strongly recommended to provide the water cushion that makes wipeouts survivable. Strong lateral currents during tide transitions add another layer of complexity.

Best strategy: sleep on the boat or leave Nemberala very early. Ndao's window is dawn to mid-morning before the wind arrives. If you're there for the first light session on a solid swell, you won't regret it.

When does Ndao Island have good surf?

Ndao is primarily an off-season and shoulder-season spot (March--April, October--November) when the trade winds drop. During dry season, early mornings before the trades start can also produce clean sessions.

How do I get to Ndao Island?

Boat charter from Nemberala, about 35 minutes. Ndao is a separate island west of Rote. A few small villages exist on the island but there are no tourist facilities.

What level surfer do you need to be for Ndao?

Advanced. The reef is shallow, the currents are strong, and the wave has real power. You should be comfortable surfing over coral and navigating tide-driven currents.
